A plucky team of Thames Valley businesswomen who have only had a handful of rowing lessons on water took bronze at the Corporate Eights Rowing Challenge. With “adrenaline pumping” the team called ‘Independent Women’ beat other novices from the area to gain top honours at the weekend.
They also had the thrill of raising £5,000 for East Berkshire Women’s Aid by taking part in the event at Reading Rowing Club.

The team, led by web expert Karen Margerison first met in May at the Thames Valley Chamber luncheon club called Sheplc. It was there that Karen told the luncheon group about the team challenge and they vowed to take part.

Wedding planner Sarah Ducker who is based at Wallingford said the team were disappointed when they came last in the first race but concentrated their effort for subsequent races against male rivals.

“We could smell victory when we came first in our heats and really pleased to do so well, “ she said.

Other team members were sales expert Natalie Holliday from Marlow, Andrea Williams who runs a Windsor corporate concierge service, Nina Gurney from a Slough Solicitors, financial advisor Penny Edwards, Sylvia Baldock from the Athena Network in Hertfordshire and Phillippa Taylor who works for Grand Union PR, who was the sub.
